Faith – developing an unshakeable confidence in truth, then acting on it. I was speaking to a team who was heading into the first round of their playoffs when this bubbled up from inside of me; “The key to your run in the playoffs is JUST …. BELIEVE! Once you doubt …. You’re out.” The bible says that it is impossible to please God without faith. As an athlete or coach thinks in their heart …so they are! The heart is where the seed of faith is. As a matter of fact it only requires the faith the size of a small mustard seed to succeed. I am reminded of the great 1980 USA OLYMPIC Hockey upset of Russia and hearing Al Michaels ask, “Do you believe?” Obviously the coaches and the players did because they won. The USA team was a bunch of amateurs playing seasoned pros and they pulled off one of the greatest Hockey upsets in the history of the sport. All things are possible for those who believe!
It is never over until the last out or the last tick on the clock. The key to increasing ones faith is twofold. “The reason you have confidence is because of how hard you’ve worked and how hard you’ve prepared.” Peyton Manning. The second thing that drives fear away and increases faith is love. You can work hard and be prepared but faith working itself out through love is the key. There is no fear in love. Perfect love casts out all fear. Fear involves torment and punishment. This is especially demonstrated and needed when mistakes are made, when adversity hits or during critical moments in the competition. Those athletes who know their coach and teammates will have their back and cover each other. They will compete with a RELENTLESS attitude, fight the good fight finish the race and keep the faith. They have a persevering spirit that will not quit. Take the heart to heart challenge …. Look your teammate or your players in the eye, grip them with a firm hand shake and speak life into their heart by saying …. “Just believe I got your back.”
