The Little Things!
Believe that the little things - do count. The great truth is if you can be trusted with a little, then you can be trusted with a lot. Conversely, if you are dishonest with a little then you will be dishonest with a lot. If you are the person that makes excuses and says “It’s no big deal” taking short cuts, you will be found out. I love this phrase from Dr. Kevin Elko, “See a little, see a lot. See a lot, see nothing.” For example look the ball into your hands or your glove, then throw or run with ball. If you do not look it in, you will see nothing. Your opponent will walk off with the blue sectional patch. Those who touch the lines in the sprints will not come up short in the game or life. It takes discipline to do the little things. The little thing when trying to lose weight is - just has one donut not five.
A man by the name of Paul of Tarsus said, “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection so that when I preach to others I myself should not be disqualified.” When we refuse to do the little things or do what we are told, we forfeit our chance at great reward or blessing. Jesus once told a fisherman by the name of Peter to cast his nets. Peter cast his net, not his nets. What’s the big deal net or nets, one little “s” is not going to make a big difference. However, the catch was so great that their net was breaking. They missed out on the big catch. So many times we do things half-speed, short cut the process, take a play or possession off and we disqualify, forfeit or miss out on the big catch because we took our eye off the ball just for a split second. The great John Wooden said, “If you do not discipline yourself someone else will.”
Be the athlete or the coach of character that does the little thing! It is all the little things that bring about big effects! Never under estimate the power of gradualness when it comes to the little things. Embrace THE PAIN OF DISCIPLINE with grit, gratitude and humility and reap the reward of finishing, success, being complete and gaining the big thing!
